Online tutoring

Live online maths tutoring with a clear learning plan

Maths support from home, in a lesson with a tutor who explains, listens, and reads your child's working while they are doing it. We teach online from Uyo, Nigeria.

When online tutoring can help

Your child may need help understanding a topic, starting homework without you sitting beside them, catching up on something from an earlier year, or preparing for an examination. Online lessons make that possible without the journey to the centre.

How a lesson works

Before
We confirm the topic, the meeting details, and anything the learner needs to hand.
During
The tutor explains the idea, works through examples, and asks the learner to try questions and say what they are thinking.
After
Practice and feedback decide what needs going over again.

Lessons run on Zoom and Google Classroom, so nothing unusual has to be installed.

Choose your lesson format

One to one

The tutor's whole attention, on what this learner needs and what you have agreed to aim at.

Small group

Guided practice alongside other learners at a similar level, where a suitable group is running. Ask us about group size and what is available for your child's stage.

Lesson options and what to confirm

What your child needs

  • A laptop, tablet or a phone that can hold a call, with working audio.
  • An internet connection that can carry a video lesson.
  • A notebook, a pen, a pencil, and any maths equipment the topic calls for.
  • A quiet place to concentrate.
  • A parent or carer to help with the setup, where that is needed.

A bigger screen makes an explanation easier to follow, but it is not required. We go through access needs and the setup before the first lesson.

Inside a session

What the hour looks like

1

Warm up

Five minutes on last week's topic, to check it stayed.

2

Teach

The new idea, worked on screen, slowly, with the learner talking through each step.

3

Try together

They lead, the tutor watches. Mistakes here are the point of the lesson.

4

Try alone

Questions from the worksheet, in their exercise book, camera on the page.

5

Set and send

Homework set, and a short note to the parent on how it went.

Match the lesson to the course

Tell us your child's class or grade, your country, the topic at school, and the examination board where there is one. A course outline, or a recent piece of work, is what lets us judge whether what we teach is right for it.

Arrange a time that works

Send your city or time zone and a few days and times that would suit. We confirm the appointment in your local time before booking. We teach from Uyo, on West Africa Time, UTC+1, and ongoing lessons depend on what the tutor has free.

Who teaches

Princess Bassey Akpan, Founder and Lead Maths Tutor

Princess Bassey Akpan

Founder and Lead Maths Tutor

Princess holds a BSc in Statistics from the University of Uyo, and has taught mathematics and statistics since 2012, in secondary and tertiary education and in school leadership. Her previous roles include Senior Statistics Lecturer at Dorben Polytechnic, Abuja, and Head Teacher at OmegaLand International School, Akwa Ibom. That experience shapes how she teaches: listen to the learner's explanation, look closely at their working, and start at the point where the understanding becomes uncertain.

Online tutoring questions

Can my child ask questions during the lesson?

Yes. The lesson is live, with time to ask questions and work through examples with the tutor.

Can you help with school homework?

We can use schoolwork to find the topics that need explaining and practising. The aim is for the learner to understand the work and become more independent, not for us to do it.

Will every learner follow the same plan?

The focus depends on the learner's starting point, their programme and the lesson format. We settle those details before enrolment.

Are lessons recorded?

Ask us about the recording arrangements for the class you are considering. We explain whether recording is offered, and the consent and access that go with it, before lessons begin.

What happens if we have a connection problem or miss a lesson?

Contact us as soon as you can. Please check the lesson and rescheduling terms before enrolling, so you know what applies to your booking.
