At PADESS SmartMath Academy the assessment is free, and it is also the point at which a family can talk through what the learner needs before booking anything paid.
Start with the learner's situation
The tutor needs some context: the class or year group, the topic they are on, and any examination coming up. What you notice at home counts too. Difficulty starting homework, or uncertainty about one particular method, tells a tutor more than a mark does.
Look at the working, not only the answer
An answer on its own does not say how it was reached. A tutor may ask the learner to describe a step, or to try a second question, to see the approach behind it.
A learner working on fractions may need help with the fraction method itself, or with a calculation used inside it. Those are different problems with different fixes, and the steps are what tell them apart.
Bring something useful
A recent piece of schoolwork, a topic list, or the name of an examination all help. Ask what is needed before the session. There is no need to gather every workbook, or to rehearse answers so the learner looks prepared: the point of the session is to see where they actually are.
Ask what the tutor recommends
- Which topic would you start with, and why?
- Which lesson format is available?
- What practice would you expect between lessons?
- How will progress be discussed?
- What are the fees and the booking terms?
Know what one session can tell you
An assessment is a starting point, not a diagnosis. A learner may show different needs once lessons are under way, and a teaching plan should change as the tutor learns more about how they think.
